Pearl Harbor Memorial Visitor Center & Museum
Transition Plan

The thumbnail images above represent the six phases of construction expected to begin near the middle of November 2008. Please click on an image to see which areas of the Visitor Center will be accessible (blue shaded areas) and which will be under construction (orange shaded areas) at a particular time. The red line shows how visitors can access the various sections of the old and new Visitor Centers.

The National Park Service and AMMA have made every effort to insure that the Visitor Center, and the USS Arizona Memorial itself, will remain open throughout the construction process and that the shuttle boats will keep running. The time intervals shown below are, by neccessity, approximate. Please call the Visitor Center (808-422-2771) for more information on progress.

PHASE 1A - Approximately 2 months - Preparation of the service entrances and parking lot. Operations will remain essentially unchanged.

PHASE 1B - Approximately 12 months (including Phase 1C below) - Construction of the new AMMA bookstore, administration offices, education building and main entrance. Current museum, bookstore, entrance, film, and tour, while altered at various points, remain accessible.

PHASE 1C - Parking area closed and finished. Preparations to open new Visitor Center begin.

PHASE 2A - Approximately 30 days - Bus turnaround modified; new Visitor Center opened; existing center closed.

PHASE 2B - Approximately 12-14 months (including Phase 2C below) - Demolish existing center; provide access to dock and Memorial through west promenade; theatre renovation to proceed as sub-phase.

PHASE 2C - Prep to open entire Visitor Center.

Dedication scheduled for December 7, 2010!
