Summer Teacher Workshops 2007 - Day 4

The fourth day of the workshop opened with an attack site tour debriefing by Daniel Martinez, continued with intense discussions on why Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Japanese perspectives on Hawaii and Pearl Harbor, and Pearl Harbor in American memory.

National Park Service Historian Harry Butowsky spoke on topics ranging from the US and Japan as competing imperial powers to pre-war domestic politics in Japan.

Tokyo University Associate Professor Yujin Yaguchi discusses the long-standing historical relationship between Japan and Hawaii.

University of California-Irvine history professor Emily Rosenberg spoke about the unque place Pearl Harbor occupies in America's national memory.

Implications for Teaching: Discussions with Specialists
Harry Butowsky, Yujin Yaguchi, and Emily Rosenberg met with teachers in small group discussions.
