Interpretive Tours for Student Groups

Unlike the general public, school groups may reserve a time and date to visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, the War in the Pacific Park on Guam, and the American War Memorial on Saipan. Because Kalaupapa is still a residential facility for Hansen’s disease patients, group tours are prohibited.

At no cost to the school or students, groups that make reservations through the Arizona Memorial Museum Association receive pre-visit informational packets and are provided an age-appropriate introduction at the Memorial parks. Within the pre-visit packet is a text copy of the USS Arizona Memorial Audio Tour. This script can assist teachers to more fully prepare their students for a visit to the Memorial. The link to the script on the Audio Tour script page is password protected due to intellectual property concerns. However, after scheduling a group visit with an AMMA education specialist, teachers will be given a password with which they can access the script. Local Hawaii schools can request a pre-visit orientation, conducted by the Education Specialist, within their classroom.

Because the National Parks are the property of the American people, AMMA has developed a set of Guidelines for School Group Reservation and Visitation to insure fairness to the general public. Similarly, because the parks intend to memorialize and respect past generations, student groups are given a Behavior Report Card to monitor their behavior at the Memorials. At the USS Arizona Memorial, teachers receive a suggested post-visit activity that makes use of the souvenir entry tickets that students receive.
